Productive Ways to Learn English Grammar

Introduction

It is important to know the best ways to learn English grammar, so that you maximize your productivity during your learning time. There are several things to consider when you are trying to maximize English grammar learning productivity.

Findings

  1. Engagement and interest are important:

One study, comparing inductive and deductive grammar learning approaches, found that inductive learning produces better results because students are required to be more active participants in the learning process [1]. These results are contended by other studies, which show that students prefer deductive approaches to grammar instruction.

One study, comparing humorous and traditional approach to learning grammar, found that students learning English through a humorous grammar textbook tested better than their traditional-grammar peers in grammatical tests completed after completing grammar classes [2].

Analysis: perhaps, these results show that student engagement in materials by thinking about them as well as some sort of emotional response being related to the material makes learning grammar more fun and engaging, which affects the absorption of information positively.

2. Students learn best in pairs:

One study, comparing paired English grammar instruction to group instruction (groups of 3, 4, and 5) found that students engaging in paired instruction did better than their grouped peers across all language fluency categories [3]. Surprisingly, the group size effect didn’t transfer in that groups of 3, 4, and 5 had no significant differences between their fluency results (based on tests taken after classes were done). The study’s authors wrote that “the efficacy of pair interaction model lies on the increasing of practicing time and the minimum psychological constraints of static pair as a result of their daily contact with the same person” [3].

Analysis: The authors found that practice time and relaxation that happens when people regularly interact with one another in groups of 2 is an integral factor to speed of language acquisition. In practice, this means something that ESL learners have known all along. Having an English practice partner, rather than studying with a large class, is important to better fluency productivity.
