Mature students (after high school)

The following information applies to mature students seeking tutoring:

Reasons for seeking tutoring:

  • Mature students completing high school credits after 18 years of age or in a post-secondary, Masters, or phD program generally come due to poor grade performance and/or difficulties with some aspect of their English curriculum (or problems with their writing in general).

  • Outside of school/academia, working professionals may come for tutoring to address a career-related issue (i.e. work application, improving English skills for work, completing or proofreading important documents).

  • Outside of both school and work, some individuals (typically ESL learners) may approach tutoring for the purpose improving their knowledge of the English language for the purpose of continuing their language education and improving their own lives.

Approaches to addressing student problems (I may choose 1 or more of the approaches below depending on the issue(s) that the student comes in with).

  • I provide online readings and videos based on weaknesses in a student's academic performance (i.e. if you don't know what this author is saying, here are some supplemental links that can help you clarify their points, as well as some links to help you structure your assignments moving forward).

  • I provide proofreading and analysis of assignments and documents. (I point out issues with an assignment or document based on the reviewer's criteria (i.e. teacher's rubric, employer's hiring criteria, government agency's writing criteria, etc) , and I leave them to the student to correct independently, or we do it together if required).

  • I provide a curriculum that is discussed and agreed upon with the student to help address their specific set of needs (typically for ESL students).
