One fun way to improve listening skills, comprehension and appreciation of the English language is by listening to music. Listening to music with and without written lyrics is a fun, engaging way to learn new genres, improve attention. Just listen to a song, find lyrics online, and try to analyze them with Google's help.

Activity

Listen to the song without the lyrics, then with the lyrics, then start asking questions about the meaning of the words. Attempt to understand the meaning of the words intellectually and emotionally

Analysis question sample

  • in verse 2, the songwriter says they "sail through the sorrows of life's marauders" - is this a song about actual sailors? what is the author describing in terms of their feelings? what do they mean by "life's marauders?" what is a marauder?
